This is a detail of a pencil drawing of burnt bush on the Hyden to Norseman road. I used the rough surface of a cutting board to add texture to the pencil marks as I worked on the piece. This technique is called frottage or rubbing. With the strong lines I was trying to achieve an impression of the black sticks left when the scrub is burnt and I purposely smudged the pencil in the foreground to show the soft new growth that is beginning to cover the ground.
I’ll post the whole drawing next week – I plan to do a second drawing of this burnt bush so they work as a diptych.
